“Remember Abigail”, a celebration of the life of Abigail Adams

The Mashpee Women’s Club November 19th luncheon features “Remember Abigail”, a celebration of the life of Abigail Adams, who was born 275 years ago on November 17, 1744 in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Wife of America’s first Vice President and second President, John Adams, Abigail is the first Second Lady and second First Lady of the United States and is often thought of as a “Founding Mother” of our nation. She famously wrote to her husband to “Remember the Ladies” advocating for women’s rights from the beginning of our nation. Abigail’s son, John Quincy Adams, was also the sixth President of the United States, making Abigail and Barbara Bush the only two women with the unique honor of being both wife and mother to Presidents.

The November 19th luncheon will feature speaker Cathy Torrey, a director of the Abigail Adams Historical Society and a docent at the historical home which is the birthplace of Abigail Adams.  Ms. Torrey will present the most interesting highlights of this extraordinary woman’s life in Massachusetts, Paris, England and Washington, DC.  Ms. Torrey will reveal how Abigail became one of the most influential women of her time, including her support in her husband’s career, her relationships with some of the most influential figures of her time, as well as her role keeping the Adam’s farm and family under control while John served his country in so many roles.
